Notes to supply clergy from Bishop James Jelinek

Supply clergy, whether canonically resident or licensed to officiate, are members of this Diocese and in effect are representatives of the Diocese whenever they function in one of the congregations of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota.

As such, these priests serve the common good. This means they bear some responsibility for the spiritual health of the congregation and its relationship with the rest of the Diocese. I ask you to be mindful of this as you prepare to lead worship.

Perhaps most importantly, I ask you to spend time in preparation of a sermon based on Episcopal Church theology that speaks to the community in particular. Preach the Good News.

It would be particularly appropriate for you to mention or acknowledge the Episcopal Church. Recall always that you represent the voice of the Episcopal Church—all of the Church that is not present in that community. Give encouragement to the congregation to be a missionary church.

Translate the Gospel into today’s setting, and speak of your faith as well. I believe it is very important for people to hear this from preachers.

I believe strongly that parishioners need to hear the Good News about what we are for as opposed to what we are against. They also need to hear about hope, how it overcomes fear, and how individual lives or individual communities can be transformed.

I am grateful for your ministry, for the years of experience you have and bring to it, for your willingness to travel sometimes to unfamiliar places, for your faith. I pray you are nurtured in the doing.
