Call for Special Offerings to Benefit Victims of Recent Weather-Related Disasters
Severe weather in recent weeks has spurred tornadoes and flooding which left many friends and neighbors across our region suffering and in need. Our friends in Hugo, Austin, Preston, and other local communities were only the first to suffer as a result of severe weather and flooding, whose effects are now cascading and spreading to other neighbors just to our South. They are just now beginning the long and difficult process of clean-up and rebuilding as storms have subsided and waters recede.
This process will take weeks, if not months, locally and will continue throughout the summer for neighbors further downstream. It will be taxing of muscle, finances, and faith. If only but for chance and a few miles separation, any of us might have been victims of a similar plight!
As these friends and neighbors begin to pick up, bail out, re-group and re-build their lives we have the opportunity to help both through our prayers and through our gifts.
In recognizing this need The Ven. Irma Wyman, Archdeacon for the Diocese of Minnesota, has issued a call for special relief contributions to assist those suffering from these weather related disasters. Archdeacon Wyman has taken the lead in this plea for help by donating up to $5,000 of matching funds to the effort. She will match $1 to every $4 raised toward helping victims in our Diocese and in nearby neighboring communities.
She encourages you to join in our support of, and relief to, those in need either through direct contribution or supplemental offer of additional matching funds. In support of this appeal, The Diocese of Minnesota has established the “Archdeacon’s Disaster Relief Appeal Fund – Summer 2008” which will remain active through the summer of 2008 and will coordinate benefit distribution through Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) and other relief partners.
