May 4 event shares memories, honors 2008 graduates, and looks to the future
by Jim Jacobsen
The first Episcopal ministry to students on the University of Minnesota campus began during the 1907-08 school year. On May 4, 2008, the University Episcopal Center (UEC) celebrated the 100th anniversary of that beginning as well as the end of the first year of a reorganized and revitalized campus ministry program. The event was held at the YMCA on the University campus. In attendance were Bishop Jelinek, UEC Board Members, students, alumni, and friends. Memories were shared and acquaintances renewed.
During the Eucharist, celebrated by Fr. Jerry Doherty, graduating students were honored and presented with personal copies of the Book of Common Prayer. Recognition was given to the roles many people played in the dramatic transition the ministry program has experienced in the past year. It was also noted that the presence on campus of Fr. Doherty was made possible by a generous grant from Ascension Church in Stillwater, and that the ministry will go forward with a new name: The University Episcopal Community (it will still be UEC).
After receiving Communion, participants enjoyed a wonderful Mexican buffet (in honor of the proximity of Cinco de Mayo). The worship concluded with the prayer of thanksgiving and a blessing. Then there was the dessert, a large decorated cake.
The UEC Ministry Team discerned with the students with regard to plans for next year. They will include moving the regular Sunday worship and supper to Grace Lutheran Church, Wednesday Prayers and Lunch, and a series of study classes led by Fr. Jerry Doherty.
Financial support of the program is vital to a continued viable ministry. A contribution of $100, for example, covers the cost of one Sunday celebration. Send whatever you are able to give to the UEC office at 310 Walnut Street , Minneapolis , MN 55414.
