Blessings for "Creatures Great and Small"
Churches around the diocese held services of animal blessings,
in honor of St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4

Above, the Rev. Mary Ramos, greets the pet of Sarah and Anna Ellingboe at St. Stephen's, Edina, on Sunday, October 7. A group of more than 80 gathered for prayers, hymns, and individual blessings for each pet. All animals received homemade dog biscuits prepared by St. Stephen's parishioner Marilyn Jackson. Above, the Rev. Beth Royalty blessed the dog of a parishioner of St. Clement's, St. Paul. 60 pet owners gathered with their furry pals and were treated to a sung service by St. Clement's Children's Choir, singing hymns of animals and St. Francis. Rector Beth Royalty wore a Noah's Ark stole adorned with animals, and topped off with the ensemble with colorful fish earnings.
After all animals were blessed, with not one growl, all were led to the lawn for a reception. There were Buddy Biscuits for the dogs, Kitty treats for the cats, carrots for the hamster, and hugs for the two stuffed animals that were brought to the reception by their adoring owners. All went home a little happier and a little more blessed.
