Honoring the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
at Breck School
Every year, Breck Chaplain Rev. John Bellaimey and a committee of perhaps 20 students prepare and host a conference in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. The Upper and Middle Schools suspend classes for the day and, following an All-School Chapel service, work, play, listen, dance, and sing together through a variety of experiences dedicated to examining our progress as a society toward full inclusion of all. Chaplains Susan Fischer (Middle School) and Nan Zosel and Religion teacher Rob Johnson also took part in the leadership of the day.
Breck 9th and 10th graders took part in a lunchtime exercise called "Giant Steps," in which they took steps forward or back, according to various God-given advantages they enjoyed (college-educated parents, native speakers of English, living in safe neighborhoods, not having any family members ever accused of a crime, and so on) or disadvantages (not being considered "American" by society, having had fewer than 50 books in the home while young, and so on).
This photo shows all the students starting out in the same place--all children of God, all equal.
