Walking and Running in Duluth for Katrina Survivors
St. Andrew's by-the-Lake sponsors second annual fundraising event

A total of 90 run/walkers, supported by a host of volunteers from St. Andrew's by-the-Lake in Duluth, participated in the second annual 5k run/walk for Hurricane Katrina victims, held on Saturday, December 2, 2006. Coming from as far away as the Twin Cities, run/walkers and local sponsors raised $5,130 for Habitat for Humanitiy in the Hurricane Katrina relief area. The starter and announcer for the event, John Nichols, a parishoner at St. Andrew's (pictured above giving pre-race instructions), knows first hand of the devastation. His parents, who live in Mississippi, had their home significantly damaged in the hurricane, so participants were able to put a human face on the event.

The run/walk has become an annual event for St. Andrew's
by-the-Lake, in recognition that recovery from this disaster is such that more than a short-term response is necessary. Plans are already underway for the third event, which is traditionally held on the first Saturday in December.

The winner of the race was Duluth resident Eric Hartmark, who finished in the exceptional time of 15:51 – a pace of 5:06 minutes per mile! Eric is currently attempting to qualify for the Olympics.
