A New Year, A New Hmong Name
As the Hmong community at Holy Apostles Church, St. Paul, gathered to celebrate the Hmong New Year on December 16, there were surprises in store for the Rev. Bill Bulson, the congregation's vicar, and his wife, the Rev. Katherine Lewis. They were presented with traditional Hmong costumes and the elders conferred on Bill a hand-picked Hmong name: Nia Soo Cheng.
Writing to clergy of the Diocese on December 21, Bishop James Jelinek recalled participating in the occasion: "Our brother and sister in Christ, Bill Bulson and Katherine Lewis were dressed in new clothes and Bill was given a new name. This is an incredible honor befitting his faithful and life-affirming ministry among them. It is always a blessing to see how beloved the priests and deacons of this diocese are among their folks, and this was one of those occasions."
