It’s a long way to travel to Minneapolis to attend a diocesan-sponsored workshop on implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), so Holy Trinity-International Falls had its own on-the-job training session!
Our Total Ministry Church responded to the 0.7% MDGs by hosting a delicious roast pork dinner Thursday evening, September 13.
The youth of the church served dinner to 119 people, who paid $10 each to support Goal Three — To Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women of Poverty. Specifically, we raised $1490 through ticket sales, contributions from the community, and an anonymous donor who underwrote the cost of the food and supplies for the supper.
We plan to send $1220 to Episcopal Relief and Development to support their micro-financing programs in South Africa Diocese that help women develop small businesses so they can support and feed their families. We have exceeded the 0.7% goal for our congregation this year.
The dinner was truly an effort of our entire Total Ministry congregation. Fifteen church members organized and executed the event with great enthusiasm and joy. Other members supported the dinner by selling tickets, distributing posters, inviting their friends, and attending the dinner with them.
A front-page article entitled "Local church says women key to solving world poverty" was published on September 10 in the International Falls Daily Journal. It advertised our goal and attracted many members of the community to the dinner.
God's spirit was truly with our young people and our Total Ministry parish in supporting MDG Three!
