White Earth young people join the MDG “honor roll”

Children from St. Columba’s buy two flocks of chickens for a Native village
in South America

The children from St. Columba’s on the White Earth Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota are the latest group of young people to take the initiative on raising money to support the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). They organized their very own church offering plates to collect dimes and quarters for the effort. In just four weeks, they had raised $50 — enough to buy two flocks of chickens from Heifer International, to be sent to South America.

“’Love your neighbor as yourself’ was stressed and learned through this endeavor,” says the Rev. Coke Smith, local priest at St. Columba’s. “Our kids are so proud that they raised the $50 so quickly. They know they are helping a South American Native village to survive. We are thrilled with our children!”

The proud young fundraisers from St. Columba’s celebrated their success at a recent barbecue and piñata party.

The children are not the only ones in the congregation to join the MDG effort. The adults at all the White Earth churches are in the process of planning their own fund-raisers. The money raised by each congregation will be pooled to finance the digging of a new well for a village in need.
